UNI Coffee Roastery Okano

The seating area with a pink patterned booth, dark wood tables, and a copper globe pendant light by the window

UNI Coffee Roastery is run by the Yokohama company GRACE, led by Sawamura Yuta, and this ten seat shop near the Okano intersection, about eight minutes from Yokohama Station's west exit, opened in April 2020 as the brand's first store. It remains the only UNI location with its own roasting machine on site, a Fuji Royal drum roaster visible from the counter and table seating. Beans come from Shan State in Myanmar, grown at 1,300 to 1,800 meters as part of a crop substitution program run with the Myanmar government and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, replacing opium poppy fields with coffee.

Hand poured filter coffee is the main draw, brewed from those Myanmar lots and served alongside espresso drinks and baked goods like canele and Basque cheesecake. The company also runs a research project with Yokohama National University turning spent coffee grounds into cellulose nanofiber, an unusual sustainability angle for what is otherwise a small neighborhood roastery counter.
