Goldener Papagei

The warm neon Goldener Papagei sign glowing in the window with the Biedermeier facades of Praterstraße reflected in the glass

Nathan Spasic named his café after Zlatni Papagaj, the Italian style espresso bar his father opened in Belgrade in 1979, and brought that spirit to Vienna in a Biedermeier ground floor of Palais Bellegarde on Praterstraße. He spent three years renovating the space, pouring the terrazzo floor himself, and shares the room with a florist's plant shop, so it reads as specialty coffee and plants in equal measure.

The beans are sourced directly from producers and roasted light to the café's own specifications, then served as espresso and filter alongside breakfast and brunch until mid afternoon. Fresh baked goods, a generous vegetarian and vegan list, natural wines and a shaded garden patio round out a menu that works from the first coffee to early evening, and two sister cafés carry the same name elsewhere in the city.
