Coffee Pirates

Founded in 2012 by Werner Savernik and Evelyn Priesch after time spent moving between New Zealand and Colombia, Coffee Pirates set out to revive a pre industrial roasting tradition in a city where, as Savernik has put it, most coffee had come to taste like burnt coal and rancid oil. It was Vienna's first organically certified third wave roastery, and still runs on that founding premise: green coffee sourced through specialty importers, pulled on a Kees van der Westen Spirit machine, with farmers paid three to five times the standard market rate.

A short walk from Vienna University, the Alsergrund flagship anchors a small operation that has since added a bakery annex nearby on the same street. Bagged beans are sold to take home alongside the daily filter and espresso service, and dogs are welcome throughout.
