Café Exchange

The Café & Bar counter set into an original teller window of Otto Wagner's Postsparkasse cash hall, with the espresso machine and pastry case behind the dark wood counter

Café Exchange sets its espresso bar into one of the original teller counters of Otto Wagner's Postsparkasse, the 1906 landmark of Viennese modernism, so every cup is poured beneath a glass ceiling in the old cash hall. Alexander Afrough, an award winning barista who opened the café in early 2022, serves third wave espresso and filter from small independent roasters, with Erika and Prem among the names behind the beans.

The hall also works as a cultural meeting point for the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab, with exhibitions, performances and lectures running alongside the coffee. Weekday lunch from 11:30 to 14:30 is a changing vegetarian menu with an Asian lean, from southeast Asian curries and kimbap to dals and salads, followed by house baked cakes, pastries, homemade lemonades and kombucha.
