Majer Via Garibaldi

Via Garibaldi is one of the widest streets in Venice, a former canal filled in under Napoleon that runs from central Castello out toward the Biennale Gardens, and this Majer shop sits along it with room to actually spread out at a table rather than balance a cup at a standing bar. The coffee comes from the same small roastery the family runs in the Cannaregio Ghetto, so the beans behind the counter here are identical to the ones at their other Venice locations.

Bread, pizza by the slice, and pastries fill most of the counter, but the espresso itself is genuinely good rather than an afterthought to the baking, tasty and reasonably priced on a street that could easily get away with charging tourist rates. It works as well for a fast morning espresso as for a longer sit down breakfast away from the Rialto and San Marco crowds.
