Perch by Woodberry Coffee Roasters

Musashi Kihara founded Woodberry Coffee in 2012 out of a small shop in Yoga, a quiet residential stop in Setagaya, after encountering specialty coffee culture in the United States and deciding to build the same rigor at home. The company now travels to origin countries to buy green coffee straight from growers rather than through importers, and feeds its own spent grounds back into a compost project run with a farm in Mitaka. Four years later this became the brand's third shop and its first outside Yoga, opening in Daikanyama in July 2016 in a space small enough that its name borrows from the Japanese word for a perch, a spot to rest for a moment during a busy day.

The shop itself is barely 20 square meters, a counter and a handful of bench seats tucked beside Daikanyama station where guests pour direct trade single origins and rotating geisha lots alongside loaves and sweets baked on site, including vegan options. It keeps one of the simplest schedules on the street, open every single day from 8:30 in the morning to 6 in the evening with no weekly closure.
