Primary Coffee

The plain blade sign reading COFFEE hanging against the warm brick facade of the building at 9 Ward Avenue in Potts Point

Dan Kim sharpened his craft as head roaster at Brewtown in Newtown and then at Heritage Coffee Brewers in Summer Hill before opening Primary on Ward Avenue, his first solo venture. The room reads more like a coffee showroom than a typical cafe, with blonde timber, white concrete and a quiet, pared back look that keeps every bit of attention on what is in the cup.

The coffee is roasted by Primary itself, with a seasonal espresso blend and a rotating lineup of single origins from Ethiopia, Colombia and beyond, served as espresso or filter and prepared as pour overs at the bar. Bags to take home sit on the shelves, and a second Primary with a working roastery opened in Marrickville, but this Potts Point original remains the compact, unhurried place to start the day.
