Kyuukei Coffee Maxwell

The interior of Kyuukei Coffee at KADA Maxwell, with a dark green tiled counter, round wooden tables and a louvred wooden door

Kyuukei is Japanese for rest, and this second cafe tucks that idea into KADA, the restored former mission hospital beside Maxwell Food Centre, where high ceilings, wooden louvred doors, dark green tiles and exposed red piping set a calm scene. Folding chairs stamped with the shop's cat logo line the corridor outside, and pets are welcome to join their owners on the outdoor seats.

The coffee runs from clean filter and espresso to the house Akatsuki blend of Tanzanian and Indonesian beans, with a lineup of single origins that rotates each quarter and ceremonial grade matcha for tea drinkers. Toasties, tarts, canelés and quiche sit alongside, and bags of beans can be ordered to take the pause home.
