Espresso Vivace

David Schomer and Geneva Sullivan opened Vivace in 1988, and Schomer went on to become the figure most credited with bringing latte art to the United States, developing the rosetta pour after seeing Lisa Persons' heart pour in 1989 and writing the book Espresso Coffee: Professional Techniques. The Broadway flagship roasts its own beans in small, precisely calibrated batches in a Northern Italian style, doubling as a live music venue on some nights.

A rotating single origin runs on Sundays. The company now runs two rooms, this Broadway original and the grand bar at Alley 24 in South Lake Union, after closing the sidewalk bar around the corner and a roasteria cafe on Denny Way. Puppuccinos are on offer for dogs and the terrace fills quickly on clear days.
