Cupping Café

Architect Gabriel Penteado left AutoCAD behind to roast coffee full time, starting Cupping in 2017 as a small to go concept run out of what had been his own bedroom, before demand pushed the shop into a real space near Beco do Batman. His wife and business partner Mayara Kelly runs the bakery and pastry side of the room. In house roasting began in 2022, and Cupping now also supplies beans wholesale to other cafes around the city.

In 2026 Cupping placed 8th in South America and 81st globally in The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops, the only Brazilian shop to make that year's global top 100, a result that has made the small Vila Madalena room a genuine pilgrimage stop rather than just a neighborhood favorite.
