Proyecto Diaz Coffee West Oakland

The long white room at Proyecto Diaz Coffee with a concrete floor, built in timber benches with grey cushions, black round tables, large potted plants and shelves of ceramics beside a woven wall hanging

Proyecto Diaz Coffee's West Oakland cafe is a bright white room of long communal tables, round tables, wood shelving, woven wall hangings and leafy plants, set in a former industrial space. The company began in 2014 around El Carmen, the family farm in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, where the Diaz family has grown coffee since the early 1900s.

Proyecto Diaz puts ten percent of its profit back into rebuilding that farm and partner farms, and it now sources and roasts coffee from farms across Latin America that share a similar story, with the idea of building a direct bridge between producer and drinker. The cafe is on 20th Street and opens Monday to Saturday from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon, with a second Oakland cafe on Broadway in Uptown.
