Bushe Zhouye

A corner of the dark blue walled interior with antique leather armchairs, a round wood table, stacked books, a stained glass lamp and blue and white porcelain plates on the wall

Bushe Zhouye occupies a European style building from the 1930s on a Y shaped corner of Longjiang Road, a short walk from the Zhejiang Road Catholic Church and the former home of writer Lao She in Qingdao's old town. Ivy climbs the facade and the interior keeps its original woodwork and window frames, filled with vintage furniture, warm lamplight and a resident cat the staff call Superman.

The bar centers on hand poured coffee made by the shop's owner, alongside espresso, cappuccino, latte and mocha, served in a room that draws a steady line of visitors for the architecture as much as the drinks. Loose tea and a short list of simple daytime dishes round out a menu built around the slow, sit and stay pace the space encourages.
