A Certain Café

A Certain Café is a bright corner room on Rua do Morgado de Mateus in Bonfim, run by Argentine artist Matias Romano and jewelry designer Agustina Fortunato, and it announces its stance on the windows: filter coffee only. White walls, high ceilings, lace curtains, loose tables, art and independent magazines give it the feel of a working studio, and a sunlit terrace on the pavement is the spot to settle in with a dog.

There is no espresso machine. Guest roasters from around Europe rotate through V60, Kalita, AeroPress and Moccamaster brews, plus batch brew and cold brew, and milk drinks come as the house Foamy, a filter coffee with steamed milk. Breakfast and lunch lean vegetable led, natural wine and cider are poured alongside the coffee, and the room doubles as a neighborhood hub for exhibitions and screenings.
