Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Duane Sorenson opened the original Stumptown on Southeast Division Street on November 1, 1999, in a building that had been a beauty parlor called Hair Bender, a name he kept for the shop's signature espresso blend. The cafe made 137 dollars on opening day with one employee, a small used Probat roaster, and a Ford Pinto for deliveries, on a stretch of Division that was nowhere near a destination at the time.

That single shop grew into one of the companies most associated with third wave coffee in America, and the Division cafe still functions as the flagship location today. The original Hair Bender sign hangs at the company's roastery, and the cafe now runs on free wifi with outdoor seating, dog friendly tables, and food from partner bakeries including Shoofly Vegan Bakery and Sparrow Bakery.
