Coava Coffee Roasters Hawthorne

The Coava Hawthorne espresso bar with a low couch, a fireplace and a long communal table under tall windows

Coava began in 2008 with Matt Higgins roasting coffee in his North Portland garage, and this Hawthorne Boulevard espresso bar is its neighborhood outpost on the east side. The room is tall and lined with windows, with a long shared table of pale wood, a low couch and a fireplace that make it one of the cosiest places in the city to sit out a rainy afternoon. The menu is built on single origin coffees that rotate with the seasons.

Coava pairs the bar with Portland partners: pastries come from Bakeshop and Gluten Free Gem, syrups from The Commissary, chocolate from Woodblock Chocolate, tea from Smith Tea and chai from Tanglewood Chai. The cafe opens at six on weekday mornings and seven on weekends, closing at six every evening, and the company also hosts weekend cuppings and classes at its roastery on Southeast Main Street.
