Ultimo Coffee

Roasted coffee beans being stirred in the cooling tray of the Ultimo roaster

Ultimo Coffee opened this corner cafe in Newbold in 2009, when Aaron and Elizabeth Ultimo, who had met working in a Washington coffee shop, moved to Philadelphia to start their own. It is regarded as one of the first specialty coffee shops in the city, and it has stayed a neighborhood fixture while the scene around it has grown.

In 2016 the couple began Ultimo Coffee Roasters, with a roastery and lab also in Newbold, so the cafe now pours coffees the team selects and roasts itself. Bags with the eagle logo line the shelves for people who want to brew at home. The cafe opens at seven on weekdays and eight at weekends, and stays open until six in the evening every day of the week.
