Røverkaffe

The brick entrance of Røverkaffe with its round ROVERKAFFE, SMAKEN AV FRIHET tally mark logo mounted above the front door

Røverkaffe, Robber's Coffee, is roasted and served by people who are incarcerated or recently released, part of a Red Cross program called Nettverk etter soning that gives them paid work and a support network on the way back into ordinary life. The name and the bean bags, stamped with a five bar tally mark and the line Smaken av frihet, the taste of freedom, lean into the story rather than hide it, and the coffee itself is roasted on a vintage Probat drum roaster kept by the same team. What began in 2017 as the neighborhood cafe Kafe Tandem, run alongside the bicycle repair workshop Red Bike, has carried the Røverkaffe name into its coffee since.

The cafe occupies a large, relaxed room in the basement under a Coop Extra on the Sandaker side of Grefsenveien, sharing the space with the bike workshop next door. Regulars mention the free wifi and the outdoor seats that catch the sun, and it is an easy stop for parents pushing a stroller as much as anyone after a slow coffee on a weekday morning. Hours run mornings into early afternoon Monday to Friday only, closed on weekends, in step with the program's weekday work schedule.
