The Canteen

A quiet corner at The Canteen with potted palms, a wire chair, and a round table on a patterned rug

Set inside the former Kioko Gallery space off James Gichuru Road, The Canteen runs coffee shop and art gallery together rather than picking one, mint green walls and red accents against white subway tile, built around the idea of showcasing Black art and local artists under the house line 'karibu kiti,' welcome, have a seat. It's a beautifully put together neighborhood coffee shop, though that description undersells how much of the room is dedicated to the art on the walls.

The food leans toward a proper steak sandwich rather than pastries alone, and the vibe sits somewhere between a relaxed coffee stop and a small gallery opening that never quite ends. A genuine Lavington neighborhood spot, next door to Rummage Studio.
