Kanso Coffee Lab

The glass topped bar at Kanso Coffee Lab with two polished espresso machines and shelves of kraft coffee bags on a warm plaster wall

Tucked into a courtyard off Theatinerstraße in the Residenzpassage, between Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz, Kanso Coffee Lab is easy to walk past and worth hunting for. The name comes from the Zen idea of simplicity as a form of beauty, and the room follows it: warm plaster walls, a glass topped bar, polished espresso machines and a wall of kraft bags, with nothing on show that does not earn its place.

The focus is on rare, traceable lots, many of them scoring 90 points or more, and the team roasts in Munich and ships beans and subscriptions well beyond Germany. Filter coffees arrive with a thermometer and a tasting card that maps how the flavors shift as the cup cools through three temperature ranges. For a deeper dive, the Coffee Omakase is a guided tasting where the baristas choose the coffees and you simply taste them side by side, from espresso to filter to off menu brews.
