Café Larue et Fils Castelnau

Inside Café Larue et Fils with a barista at the espresso machine, a pastry case on the marble counter, bags of house roasted coffee, and guests working at wooden tables

Café Larue et Fils opened on Rue de Castelnau in 2009 as the first of a trio of Villeray cafes, founded by two entrepreneurs who wanted a neighborhood social club built around a good cup. Branches followed on Jarry in 2013 and Saint-Zotique in 2017, and since 2019 the team has roasted its own beans in Montreal, choosing every lot with care for the people who grew it.

The Castelnau room is the original and the most intimate, with white tile, warm wood, and seating for about twenty eight that easily doubles once the street side patio opens. Pastries come from local bakeries, a bag of the house roast is never far from the counter, and the regulars have turned the place into the kind of lively corner where friendships and families have started over the years.
