Standing Room Coffee Carlton

The timber lined interior of Standing Room Carlton with vertical poles, a slim window bench and two customers standing in the daylight

Standing Room's Grattan Street bar in Carlton is the brand's idea in its purest form: a standing only espresso bar facing north toward the University of Melbourne's 1888 Building, with no seats and nothing to do but order and drink coffee. Designed by Dion Hall, the L shaped room is built from warm timber with vertical poles, benches and rotating shelves, and generous daylight from the street frontage.

Since 2013 Standing Room has taken coffee to Melbourne's students, workers and visitors, roasting its beans locally and sourcing them through trusted importers with a focus on traceability and transparency. Every location pours the house blend, which is also sold by the bag. The Carlton bar opens on weekdays from half past seven and on Saturdays from eight, and closes at four.
