Santa Kafeina

The lit white Café Take Away sign of Santa Kafeina seen from the street at dusk, with purple heather in front

Santa Kafeina is a small Chamberi coffee shop run by Yessika Pacheco and Javier Castillejo, two Venezuelans who trained as baristas in Spain and the UK before opening in late 2016. Javier chose the neighborhood for its everyday local rhythm rather than its tourist traffic, and the shop now sits on a corner of Calle de Viriato, close to Iglesia metro. The room is compact, and what it lacks in space it makes up for with warm, unhurried service that turns first timers into regulars.

The coffee comes from Spanish micro roasters instead of one house supplier. Puchero has supplied the filter, while guest espresso beans, including Right Side from Barcelona, have rotated every couple of weeks, all pulled on a La Marzocco machine. Expect a short, changing selection of roasts and baristas who enjoy walking you through what is on the bar. Doors open early on weekday mornings and close mid afternoon, so this is a stop for a morning or lunchtime coffee.
