Cognoscenti Coffee Roasters

Yeekai Lim, a Malaysian immigrant and former architect who worked with Frank Gehry, started Cognoscenti as a coffee cart in 2009 before opening this Culver City room in 2011. Before founding his own brand, Lim designed the coffee bars for Endorffeine and Copa Vida, a shared design lineage across three otherwise independent shops worth knowing even though they are separate businesses.

Cognoscenti roasts its own beans on site and also pours guest roasters like Heart Coffee and Take Flight, a choice framed as solidarity with fellow small roasters rather than pure house pride. A second cafe has since opened in the DTLA Fashion District, this Washington Boulevard original remaining the Culver City flagship.
