The Penny Drop

A white espresso machine at The Penny Drop with its name in bronze lettering and coloured cups stacked on top

The Penny Drop is a compact corner coffee shop on Tottenham Street that opened in June 2017 as the London sister of a Melbourne cafe, which began as a pop up in 2015 and found a permanent home in 2016. The London room seats about twenty at most, benches outside included, with a long padded bench under the windows, a neat free standing bar and a back counter. It feels like the coffee shops London used to have.

The coffee comes from a rotating cast of roasters, with two choices on espresso, one on batch brew and more on V60 pour over, all changing roughly every week. The baristas train constantly and compete in championships, so latte art and technique are taken seriously. Hours favour the working week, closing on Sunday, with a shorter day on Saturday, and benches outside take the overflow.
