Old Spike Elephant and Castle

The glass shopfront of Old Spike on Southwark Bridge Road, with the lit Old Spike Coffee with Impact sign above a window showing the espresso machine, and a sandwich board by the door

Old Spike is the Peckham roaster that runs as a social enterprise, committing most of its profits to training and employing Londoners experiencing homelessness, and this coffee bar on Southwark Bridge Road is its Elephant and Castle outpost. The training pairs barista and roasting skills with support around mental health, housing and getting back into work, so the person pulling your shot may well be learning the trade.

The coffee is Old Spike's own, roasted in South London and served as espresso and filter. The room is small with limited indoor seating, so it works best as a quick stop on the way through the neighbourhood. Weekdays run from half past seven to four, and weekends start at half past eight and finish at three.
