Lane Eight Coffee

The white Lane Eight Coffee shopfront on The Pavement with its fine lettering, a large window and a guest at the window counter

Lane Eight is George Rendall's calm, minimal coffee shop on The Pavement beside Clapham Common, the original of a small group that has since added Lavender Hill, Tooting Bec and East Hill. The name comes from taking the outside lane, a preference for less clutter and things done well. The room is petite but perfectly formed, with a light wood bar, a black Sanremo espresso machine and a bench against the floor to ceiling windows.

The aim is simple: high quality beans, small batch roasting and careful brewing, so the cup tastes good every time. Coffee comes from Red Bank in Kendal, a B Corp roaster that visits its producers each year, with a house espresso and a single origin on batch brew, plus ceremonial matcha. Guest roasters turn up on the retail shelf, and bringing your own cup is encouraged.
