Kapihan

A white espresso machine with a glowing base under tall stacks of green paper cups, beside two white grinders with stickers and a potted plant, with trailing plants and a woven hanging above, seen through a blurred leaf in the foreground

Kapihan means coffee house in Tagalog, and this Battersea Park Road shop is run by the Motley family, siblings David, Nigel and Rosemary. They roast their own coffee in Battersea, with beans from the Philippines at the heart of the range, and the shop's journal profiles individual farms and producers in the same way a good roaster would. The shop reopened on Battersea Park Road in January 2023, and a second Kapihan now sits further along the same road.

The design is a modern take on the Bahay Kubo, the stilt house of Filipino architecture, and the counter doubles as a bakery for Filipino breads and pastries alongside the coffee. Barako, a Philippine variety with low acidity and a sweet finish, gets its own spotlight, and bags of the house roasts go home with you or arrive by post through the web shop.
