Formative Coffee

Ian Kissick moved from Ireland to London to study computer science, worked a corporate IT job, then discovered specialty coffee, left the job behind and trained at Taylor St Baristas before opening Formative in March 2019. The shop took runner up for World's Best New Cafe at the Sprudge Awards in its first year, and Kissick has since gone on to win the UK Barista Championship and place sixth at the World Barista Championship.

The shop roasts its own coffee, sold across tiers from an everyday Benchmark up through Exceptional and Competition grade lots, poured through a Black Eagle machine on a deliberately restrained Coffee A and Coffee B espresso menu rather than a long drinks list. Coffee is served around fifty three degrees Celsius to protect its flavor, on a small pedestrianized corner site between Victoria and St James's Park that's built for a quick, focused stop rather than a long stay.
