Carnival Coffee Roasters

The yellow Carnival Speciality Coffee Roasters sign with pink lettering and a pink sun painted on the blue frontage, over a warmly lit window of string lights, palms and guests talking at low tables

Jayne and Juan started Carnival after a backpacking trip through Central America with their children, where one cup in Chiapas, Mexico convinced them to leave their jobs and roast. For Juan the pull runs deeper: his grandfather won a mountainside outside Medellin in a card game, and the family has grown coffee on it ever since. They are proudly Penge, a neighbourhood they call a hub of creativity and community spirit.

Everything is roasted in the Penge workshop that doubles as the shop. Each coffee wears its own mask, illustrated by neighbour Rosie Lovelock and inspired by the carnivals of its origin. At the counter expect a seasonal single origin espresso menu, flat whites that change with the beans and an experimental pour over list, plus free tastings and workshops now and then. Local orders are cycled out across south east London.
