Calico

A wall of labeled Calico retail bean bags on a slatted wooden display shelf, sunlight across the room

Junchao Huang, who placed third in the UK Brewers Cup in 2023, opened Calico on Lower Marsh in December 2024 with a founding team whose backgrounds run through architecture and design, which shows in the dark wood, wraparound counter they built themselves. The name nods to calico fabric, plain, heavy, untreated cotton, as a stand in for simplicity and substance.

The house espresso blends beans from Kenya, Yunnan and Brazil, while a rotating pour over list of around eight coffees runs through single origins and microlots from Panama, Kenya, Ethiopia and Yunnan, including limited Panama Geisha drops. Every drink comes with an origin card, part of a stated commitment to sourcing transparency and direct producer relationships. Pastries lean toward black sesame, a roll cake and miso cookies among them, alongside almond croissants and banana bread.
