Alchemy Cafe The City

The Alchemy Cafe shopfront on a City lane with red brick pillars, a lit window and a chalkboard by the door

This corner of Ludgate Broadway, a short walk from St Paul's, is where Alchemy began in 2013, and it remains the roastery's flagship cafe. Alchemy is a family run business started by Anne and Joe O'Hara after a backpacking trip through Central America, and it grew out of serving specialty coffee at events, with a Glastonbury presence every year since 2005 before the move into roasting in 2008.

The beans are roasted on an eighty five year old reconditioned machine named Brynhildr, in a light style aimed at showing off the coffee, and many come through direct trade partnerships with farmers paid directly in their own currency. At the cafe the baristas talk you through the seasonal espresso and filter options, and you can pull up a seat at the window bar to watch the City go by.
