Laynes

The Laynes dining room, with a bold ochre and brown tiled wall above a mustard banquette, wooden tables and matching chairs under a black framed window

Laynes opened in 2011 as an espresso bar for commuters leaving Leeds station, and it is still barista owned and run. The shop set out to pay close attention to two ingredients, coffee and milk, and over the years it has added a kitchen that turns out breakfast and brunch, with tables out front on New Station Street.

The house espresso is Red Brick, a seasonal blend from London roaster Square Mile, with guest coffees rotating through alongside it. Pastries and sweet bakes come from the shop's own bakery in Armley, and in the evening the bar switches to wine, beer and coffee cocktails.
