Afloat Coffee Roaster

The long black bar at Afloat Coffee Roaster with an espresso machine, shelves of bagged beans glowing under warm strip lights and baristas working behind the counter

Husband and wife Jimmy Leong and Loo Choy Leng opened Afloat in 2022 on the second floor of a leafy shop row in Bukit Jalil, taking the name from the Chinese idea of a floating life, stolen half days of leisure. The room is a study in black, with a long dark bar lit by thin strips of warm light, shelves of bagged beans above the machine, and warmer brown seating for lingering. Out on the balcony you can drink among the treetops.

Everything is roasted weekly on site and sorted into tiers by varietal, processing method and origin: Macro for everyday cups, Micro for clean and nuanced lots, Unique for rare or specially processed coffees, and a Rare Find shelf for the standouts. The couple are both award winning baristas, so espresso and filter are made with competition grade care, and local bakers rotate through collaborations at the counter. Downstairs, their espresso bar Submerge offers a quieter, deeper take on the same coffee.
