Catalina Coffee

The white brick corner storefront of Catalina Coffee at 2201 with its red lettering, three copper lamps over the sign, white framed windows and a door, and two guests at blue metal tables on the pavement

Catalina is a compact, brick walled coffee shop on Washington Avenue that opened in 2007 as a stop for commuters heading downtown, and it has been serving classic espresso, pour overs and lattes ever since. Its founder built the first shop himself, and the menu has stayed deliberately short, with the sizes pared back long ago.

Cortados, flat whites and a café con leche anchor the drinks, steady regulars fill the room, and bags of whole bean coffee sit on the shelves. The room is small and often busy, which is part of its charm. It opens early, at half past six on weekdays and half past seven on weekends, and stays open until seven in the evening.
