Matts Johansson, who first opened Café Java on Vasagatan in the early 1990s, launched da Matteo in Marstrand in 2003 before bringing it into central Gothenburg, where the Magasinsgatan square now runs almost entirely on the brand, a large roastery on one side of the cobblestones and a big cafe on the other. The company has since been named the Nordics' best roaster, still buying directly from producers in places like Ethiopia, Costa Rica, and Colombia rather than through outside brokers.

Wood fired pizza and hand baked sourdough bread, made using the same traditional methods that shaped Johansson's early bakery work, sit alongside the espresso and filter menu, giving the room the feel of an Italian bakery filtered through Nordic minimalism. Long hours through midweek and weekends make it as much a full day stop as a coffee break.
