Lowdown Coffee

Lowdown's white marble counter with a chrome espresso machine, twin taps, and an oak shelf lined with cups and trailing greenery against a wood panelled wall

Paul Anderson opened Lowdown below George Street in February 2016, a basement room styled with Japanese minimalism and built around a close working relationship with Koppi, the Swedish roastery started by barista champions Anne Lunell and Charles Nystrand. That relationship set the tone for a bar built on precision and Nordic restraint rather than a house blend.

The coffee list rotates weekly through leading European roasters, Koppi, Coffee Collective, La Cabra, Friedhats, and Gardelli among them, with the water mineralised differently for each bean poured. The kitchen trimmed back in 2026 to coffee, tea, cakes, and pastries only, vegan options included, and the basement room remains wheelchair accessible and dog friendly despite sitting below street level.
