Democratic Coffee Bar

A narrow counter built into the ground floor of Copenhagen's Main Library — Hovedbiblioteket — which makes it one of the only specialty bars in the city where you're as likely to be surrounded by returned novels as by other coffee drinkers. Founded in 2011 by Oliver Oxfeldt, it's grown almost entirely on local word of mouth rather than marketing, which fits a shop with no official website and only an Instagram presence to speak of. It's busy in the way libraries are busy — quiet, steady, no wasted motion — rather than in the way cafés usually are, and the crowd skews toward people working or reading rather than socializing.

Beans are sold at the counter, a newer addition to what started as a straightforward bar program built around someone else's roast. Worth knowing before you visit with a pet: the library's own conduct policy explicitly excludes animals other than service dogs from the building, which applies to this counter's indoor seating even though a few outdoor tables sit on the pavement just outside. A quiet, unglamorous, reliably good cup in an unlikely setting.
