Andersen & Maillard

As much a bakery as a coffee bar, occupying a corner site near Assistens Cemetery — the leafy resting place of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard, and one of Nørrebro's most-used public green spaces — with a triangular garden out front that fills up the moment the sun is out. The interior, designed by Danish studio Frama, leans on raw concrete and dense greenery rather than the reclaimed-wood default most third-wave cafés reach for, plants doing most of the decorating rather than furniture or art.

Bread and pastry are baked on-site and are arguably the bigger draw, with coffee and bagged beans rounding out the counter rather than headlining it. A second, near-identical location operates on Ny Østergade in Indre By for anyone in the city center, and a third, bakery-only outpost sits at Antwerpengade in Nordhavn for those who just want the bread. The Nørrebro original remains the one worth the trip, particularly on a clear morning when the cemetery-adjacent garden is doing its best impression of a park café.
