Build Coffee & Books

Hannah Nyhart and Bea Malsky started Build as a summer 2016 farmers market coffee stand, crowdfunding roughly 17,000 dollars to open a permanent space inside the Experimental Station, a nonprofit community hub in Woodlawn founded in 2002. In June 2025 ownership passed to three new owners, author and professor Eve L. Ewing, Invisible Institute data director trina reynolds-tyler, and City Bureau co founder Andrea Faye Hart, all early supporters of the space who now operate it as volunteers taking no income.

The rebrand to Build Coffee and Books added an expanded social justice focused bookstore and zine section, and the cafe ties into mutual aid programs like Market Box, keeping original chef Christian Sutter on through the ownership change.
