Deluxe Coffeeworks Metal Lane

Deluxe Coffeeworks began in April 2009 when New Zealand trained coffee professional Judd Nicolay teamed up with film production veteran Carl Wessel, bought a second hand roaster and set it up in Carl's backyard. Six months later the pair opened their first shop on Church Street in the city centre with a 5 kilo roaster in the window, pulling espresso for everyone from high court judges to skaters and punks and famously selling a ten rand cup.

Today the Gardens bar on Kloof Street carries on that punk attitude and the Always Grindin motto under a neon coffee sign. Espresso drinks are made with the Deluxe House Blend of Brazilian, Guatemalan and Ethiopian beans, which the team sources, blends and roasts itself, with single origin lots from places like Costa Rica and Colombia on the roastery's own list. It trades from early morning through the afternoon on weekdays and until lunchtime on Saturdays.
