Judith and Matt Harrison opened the first Stir on the Hawthorn Way corner of Chesterton Road about a decade ago, building a full bakery into the back of the cafe from day one. The coffee comes from Assembly, poured alongside sourdough, pastries and cakes baked fresh on site, and the pair have since grown the idea into a small group of Cambridge cafes and bakery counters.

The original room stays open every day from eight to four, with a kids blackboard by the door, a water bowl for dogs and a solid run of gluten free and vegan bakes in the case. It fills with prams and laptops in equal measure through the morning, then settles into a quieter lunch crowd by early afternoon.
