17 GRAMS

Alexx McKendry opened the first 17 GRAMS on Meeting House Lane in the Lanes in 2016, a decade of growth that's since added a Boundary Road shop bridging Hove and Portslade and a third site in Chichester. A giant Alice in Wonderland mural marks the entrance, colorful decor carrying through a handful of tables inside and pavement seating for people watching on sunny days.

Coffee has been roasted in house since 2022, when the team converted an old grain store in North Laine into a roastery built around a restored 1995 Petroncini machine sourced from Exeter's Crankhouse Coffee. Several single origins usually run alongside the house espresso, and the all day brunch menu, a chorizo breakfast burrito and a fig and bacon eggs Benedict among the regulars, has become as much a draw as the coffee itself.
