Forge Baking Company

The wooden counter and Forge Baking Company wall sign inside the Union Square cafe

Forge opened in October 2014, started by Tucker and Jen after roughly seven years running Bloc, an earlier Somerville cafe. The Union Square space is a converted warehouse, with a high ceilinged main cafe hung with plants, a separate vintage ice cream parlor with marble counters, and a bakery visible through an observation window where the bread and pastries are made fresh each day.

Coffee shares the counter with that bread program rather than taking top billing, but the espresso bar gets the same attention to detail as everything else on the menu. Between the bakery, the ice cream bar and the coffee counter, it functions as three businesses under one Forge branded roof.
