Flat Black Coffee

The FLATBLACK sign above the storefront, with Specialty Coffee Roasted in Boston lettered on the window

Flat Black opened its first retail shop in Dorchester's Lower Mills neighborhood in 2003, named for the Australian term for an americano, and grew from there into one of Boston's larger independent roasters. A second cafe downtown on Franklin Street closed in 2023, leaving this small storefront, three tables and all, as the company's only remaining cafe.

The roasting happens on site, with a rotating list of single origin coffees that has picked up real competition results over the years, including a placement in America's Best Espresso built on a Yemeni single origin shot. Wild turkeys are a genuine neighborhood fixture and turn up in the shop's own photos wandering past the front door.
