Spontan Coffee

A wooden shelf at Spontan holding several issues of Standart coffee magazine and a Paulo Coelho paperback

Spontan opened in Moabit in February 2016, built by a goldsmith and a board game enthusiast who put their own hand built furniture and a rotating cast of guest roasters into one small room rather than settling for a single house blend. Fjord, The Barn, and Bonanza have all supplied espresso here at different points, filter runs on a V60, and issues of Standart, the Berlin founded print quarterly about coffee, sit out on the shelf, the kind of detail that signals a shop staffed by people who actually read about the industry rather than just working in it.

The menu has since grown to include the shop's own homemade bagels alongside the coffee program, and regulars single out the meticulous, unhurried way drinks get made even when a barista is asked for something off the printed menu. Design still runs through the room the way it did on day one, shades of blue, geometric touches, and furniture built by hand rather than bought as a set, in a small calm street just off the Spree in Moabit.
