Chapter One Coffee

Chapter One's illuminated sign and a retail coffee bag price tag reading Apricotini, heirloom, red honey

Chapter One has run its corner of the Bergmannkiez since 2011, a small Kreuzberg room built around brewing rather than roasting its own beans, though one regular who tracks Berlin's coffee scene closely points out that it does both, roasting some of its own coffee while still bringing in guest roasters that rotate through constantly. Sacks and retail bags from DAK Coffee Roasters, Friedhats, Tim Wendelboe, and Sandbox Coffee have all passed through the retail shelf, and the shop hosts pop up tastings when a visiting roaster is in town, most recently a DAK Coffee Roasters session on the bar.

The brew list stretches well past espresso and V60 into siphon, AeroPress, French press, and Chemex, a spread aimed at people who already know what they like rather than a simplified tourist menu. Bread and pastries are made from scratch and given a slow, more than twenty hour proof, and the compact room with sidewalk benches outside stays busy enough on weekends that seating, not coffee quality, is the thing people mention wanting more of.
