Bonanza Coffee

The shop that was running before Berlin specialty coffee even had a name for itself, roasting on Oderberger Straße since 2006, among the very first wave of European roasters to treat coffee with the seriousness now taken for granted across the continent, and arguably one of the shops that made Berlin a specialty coffee capital in the first place. It occupies a small, slightly worn in room that's never chased a showroom look, on a cobblestoned Prenzlauer Berg street that was distinctly rougher around the edges when Bonanza first opened than the stroller heavy, gentrified neighborhood it sits in today. The counter, the tables, and the roaster itself all share the same compact space. Nothing here is separated out for effect, which reads as confidence rather than an oversight this many years in.

Bagged beans, branded tote bags, and simple apparel are sold on site and online. It's less polished than most of what's opened around it since, which regulars tend to treat as the actual point rather than something to fix. Dogs are explicitly welcome, fitting a space that's never been precious about presentation.
