Roots at the Commons

The open air counter at Roots at the Commons, a concrete bar with a ROOTS menu board behind it, a barista serving guests at a wood bar and shelves of brewing gear against the corrugated metal wall

Roots traces back to 2013 as a team spun off from the cafe Roast, then started pouring for the public the day theCOMMONS opened its doors on January 1, 2016, making this Market Floor counter one of Bangkok's original specialty coffee addresses. The company now runs nine branches across the city but still calls its approach Cup to Farm, directing part of every sale back to the Thai growers, processors and connectors named on its own site, including a farmer called Nawin and a processor known as P' Chatree.

The counter itself is a compact bar built into theCOMMONS' open air market floor, pouring espresso, batch brew, seasonal filter and cold brew built almost entirely around Thai grown lots alongside bottled drinks and retail beans to take home. Seating is shared with the rest of the food court rather than private, so regulars treat it as a quick, social coffee stop between errands rather than a place to set up a laptop for the afternoon.
