Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors

The white storefront of Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors on Chicon Street with its signboard, red doors and a planted frontage

Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors opened on Chicon Street in 2014 and has been a fixture of the east side ever since. The name comes from the figure eight in ice skating, a maneuver that looks effortless once mastered, which the founders, longtime Austin baristas Ryan Hall and Kathleen Carmichael, compare to a barista pulling a clean shot. About three years after opening they began roasting their own beans, and the cafe now serves its own roasts alongside coffees from other roasters.

The low white building sits on a quiet stretch of Chicon, with a red door at each end and a planted frontage, and the roastery shares the same address as the cafe. Bags of freshly roasted coffee are sold to take home, and a second Figure 8 cafe operates on Airport Boulevard. Both open at seven in the morning and stay open until seven in the evening.
