Claye Tobin from Australia, Nina Tromp from the Netherlands and Josh Cotton from the UK founded Uncommon in 2018, building a roastery around direct relationships with producers and a green coffee book that runs eighty to ninety percent organic certified or Rainforest Alliance equivalent. A sister location, Uncommon Bar, opened across the street at the end of 2024, developed with Instil Collective around the psychology of staying connected to where a cup actually comes from.

Cards are accepted and gluten free options sit alongside the standard menu, though the Bar location runs deliberately wifi free. Dog owners are common among the regulars, drawn in part by the short walk from Vondelpark.
